Avoiding Chigger Bites

Avoiding Chigger Bites

Getting Chiggers Off Your Lawn
Chiggers become prevalent during the warm months of spring to fall. They set up in places that have lush vegetation like shrubs, berry patches, dense weeds and high grasses. Eliminate the attractive habitat and the chiggers may go with it.

Destroy Their Home
Don’t grow a jungle. Mow the lawn and pull weeds. Also avoid letting piles of leaves and other plant matter collect. Soapy water will kill off adults in larvae in areas that are already infested. Flood these spots once a week for at least a month.

Sometimes chiggers can get in to your houseplants. If this happens move them outside and use a good insecticidal soap that is labeled safe for houseplants. Keep the plants outside for a least a month while you continue to treat them.

If a household member or pet gets infested with chiggers, get them out of their clothes and wash everything right away. The larvae can migrate rapidly, finding new homes on others in the house or your plants.
